Chaga and Lung Cancer - AlaskaChaga

Chaga is credited with a long list of benefits, and one of the boldest claims is that it can fight lung cancer. Here's a realistic look at what the evidence supports.

The honest answer: early laboratory and animal research is interesting, but there is no reliable human evidence that chaga prevents or treats lung cancer, and it is not a cancer treatment. Here's what's known.

Where the claim comes from

Chaga mushroomAs with other cancers, chaga's reputation here stems from Russian tradition and Solzhenitsyn's 1966 novel Cancer Ward, which drew Western scientific attention to the mushroom.

What the research shows — and its limits

Much of chaga's potential is linked to its antioxidant content, which helps neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress — a factor in many diseases. A 2010 laboratory study found chaga could slow the growth of lung-cancer cells in a controlled setting and slow tumour growth in mice, and a 2009 study pointed to triterpenes prompting cancer-cell death without harming healthy cells.

The important context: these are test-tube and animal studies. They do not show that drinking chaga tea prevents or treats lung cancer in people, and large human clinical trials are lacking. Chaga is not a substitute for medical treatment.

If you're considering chaga

Some people enjoy chaga tea as an antioxidant-rich daily drink as part of a healthy lifestyle. If you have lung cancer or are undergoing treatment, chaga can interact with medications and affect bleeding and blood sugar — speak with your oncologist before using it. Use chaga only as a complement to, never a replacement for, proven medical care.

This article is for general information only and is not medical advice. Chaga is a food and wellness product, not a treatment or cure for lung cancer or any other disease. Please consult your doctor about screening and treatment.
